Depending on the category, applicants may include highly skilled professionals, company executives, investors, startup entrepreneurs, researchers and the eligible spouses and children of SMART Visa holders.

Each SMART Visa category has its own eligibility requirements, so the documents you need to submit will depend on which category you choose.

Thailand SMART Visa Categories

The Thailand SMART Visa has five categories, each designed for a specific type of applicant.

  • SMART T (Talent) – For highly skilled professionals working in Thailand’s targeted industries.
  • SMART I (Investor) – For investors who meet the required investment criteria.
  • SMART E (Executive) – For senior executives employed by qualifying companies.
  • SMART S (Startup) – For entrepreneurs who are starting or developing an approved startup business in Thailand.
  • SMART O (Others) – For eligible spouses and children of SMART Visa holders. Children are generally required to be under 20, although limited exceptions may apply to children of SMART T holders.

Each category has its own eligibility requirements, which we’ll explain in the following section.

Thailand SMART Visa Requirements

The requirements for a Thailand SMART Visa vary depending on the category you apply for. All applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for their selected visa to get approved.

Depending on your visa category, you might need to show:

  • Relevant qualifications, skills or professional experience.
  • Employment with a qualifying company.
  • Investment in an approved business or project.
  • A position as a senior executive.
  • Ownership or involvement in an approved startup.
  • Financial requirements where applicable.

The financial rules are not the same for every SMART Visa category. Some applicants qualify mainly through salary and experience, while others are assessed on investment or startup funding.

As a general guide:

  • SMART T applicants usually need a monthly income of at least 100,000 baht, although some may qualify at 50,000 baht.
  • SMART E applicants normally need at least 200,000 baht a month, together with the required qualifications and experience.
  • SMART I and SMART S applicants are assessed using separate investment and startup funding rules.

During the application process, Thai authorities will review your qualifications and documents before issuing a SMART Visa.

Benefits of the Thailand SMART Visa

The Thailand SMART Visa has several advantages compared to other long-term visas in Thailand.

Some of the main benefits include:

  • No separate work permit is required for work covered by your approved SMART Visa, although additional endorsement may be needed if your job, employer or business activities change.
  • You can stay in Thailand for up to four years, depending on your visa category.
  • You only need to report to immigration once a year, instead of every 90 days.
  • You can enter and leave Thailand as often as you like while your visa is valid.
  • Your spouse and children, if eligible, can also apply under the SMART O category.
  • The SMART Visa gives more flexibility to qualified professionals, investors, executives, and entrepreneurs working in Thailand’s targeted industries.

How to Apply for a Thailand SMART Visa

Applying for a Thailand SMART Visa includes several stages, as your qualifications must first be endorsed before the visa can be issued.

The process is generally as follows:

  1. Start by choosing the SMART Visa category that fits your qualifications or investment.
  2. Submit your application online along with the required documents to have your qualifications reviewed.
  3. Wait for the Thai government agencies to review your application. Once complete documents have been received, the qualification endorsement process normally takes at least 30 working days.
  4. If your qualifications are approved, you will get an endorsement letter. The endorsement letter is valid for 60 days, so you must complete the visa-issuance stage within that period.
  5. Next, apply for your SMART Visa at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate. If you are eligible to apply from inside Thailand, you can go to the One Stop Service Center for Visa and Work Permit in Bangkok.
  6. After your visa is issued, you can enter or stay in Thailand according to the rules of your approved SMART Visa.

Processing times depend on your visa category and how quickly your documents are verified.
